Did you even know that those Key West-style buildings by the Alliance for the Arts have a second floor, and they’re filled with working artists’ studios?
You’re not alone.
But, you’ve been missing out on the edgiest cultural event you’ll find on Colonial Boulevard.
Alliance for the Arts has teamed up with the other local businesses and organizations in the shopping plaza next door to host SoCo Second Saturdays. SoCo stands for “South of Colonial,” and the event features a wide variety of things to do.
The Arts building is located at 10091 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. Other participating businesses are located within easy walking distance.
SoCo Saturday isn’t your average art walk. It’s a new and unique cultural experience for this area of Fort Myers.
Signage and pathways lead you from one building to the next to discover local artist studios; watch a short play; listen to live music performances and sip a glass of wine along the route.
Studios and businesses stay open from 6 to 10 p.m.; there is a lot to see and do, so it’s best to get there early.
The second-Saturday events launched last October and are nearing a one-year anniversary. To commemorate the event, event attendees will be painting large murals at each SoCo Saturday and they will be put on display.
Each evening has a schedule of performances to attend, which can be found on the website, socoswfl.com. These scheduled activities include time slots of musicians who will play a set at a studio, poetry open mic times and short plays or dramas to be shown
at the Alliance for the Arts or Broadway Palm Theater.
At each stop, participants can fill out a “golden ticket” to enter a chance to win a prize for the weekend, which could be anything from a free art class to theater tickets or a piece of art. Many of the studios offer up free wine and snacks, too.
The next SoCo Second Saturday will be Sept. 9. Don’t miss it!
Participating studios and businesses are: Alliance for the Arts; Broadway Palm Dinner Theater; DAAS CO-OP Art Gallery & Gifts; The Union Artist Studios at the Art Loft; Ocasiocasa at the Art Loft; Luciano Deandrade’s Studio Os Urbanos; A Sweedish Affair; Catch 22 Live Music & Sports Bar; Suzanne’s Dance Fitness and City of Palms Studio.
